The original Winnett house project transformed a single story ranch house into an open plan, loft like living space at the ground floor with second floor bedrooms. The new second floor rooms were arranged in cruciform configuration, each opening onto small rooftop gardens that provided views to Santa Monica Canyon and beyond to the Pacific Ocean. The unusual geometry of the site on a cul de sac limited the total amount of square footage that could be added to 50% of the size of the original ranch house.
Ten years after completion of the original project, the new owners, a working couple with children, enlisted kdA to create a complimentary addition that would meet the needs of the family: an office, space for outdoor entertaining, a swimming pool, and a screening room that could be used for film development while also serving as a theater for family movie nights and a guest room for visiting relatives.
The new 600SF building meets the City definition of an ADU and occupies the length of the rear property line, screening the pool and outdoor space from adjacent properties. The faceted form of the new building responds to the geometry of the original addition, creating mirror-like reflections in the new pool. The new building extends directly from the cast concrete wall of the pool, conserving as much open space in the yard as possible. A bridge crosses the pool to a new outdoor living space covered by a cantilevered mirror stainless steel canopy. Structural steel sections supporting the canopy run as ribs through the new building as one moves from the covered outdoor space to a small kitchen and bath, a home office and the dark stained wood screening room.
