Created to alleviate crisis conditions and overcrowding in local schools, the Camino Nuevo Elementary School is the first of a series of projects kdA developed for the Pueblo Nuevo Development, a Los Angeles non-profit community investment organization founded by Dr. Philip Lance in 1993.
Interrogating the architectural concept of the interoperability of different types of structures, kdA transformed an unfinished, L-shaped mini mall into a 12-classroom elementary school using minimal means, keeping the project cost under $1 million. The original commercial building lacked accessibility for handicapped students and sufficient space for classrooms, as well as privacy and security for students and staff.
The firm resolved these issues by constructing an addition that provides a new entry and face to the street. This building provides a secure entry, as well as utility facilities and restrooms. For additional privacy, the firm designed a lattice-like structure to connect the classrooms and form a grand staircase entrance. The former parking lot below is converted into a central courtyard and amphitheater, which may be used throughout the day to accommodate rotating recesses and lunch hours. Immediately outside the school courtyard the firm designed raised planters, creating a shaded oasis for parents to congregate during pickup and drop-off hours.
The bright colors of the building reflect not only the feel of the neighborhood but also kdA’s desire to create buildings that are simultaneously inviting and invigorating to the local community.
