Since 2016 kdA has been working with a leading technology company on several new office spaces in Menlo Park, Los Angeles and New York City. Designed to accommodate a variety of program, kdA’s work features a balance of open office, conference rooms and breakout spaces, punctuated by a extensive food service program, libraries and other amenities.
In 2023, kdA delivered 1.2 million square feet of space for the client in this high-rise building in New York’s Hudson Yards. Across 20 stories of empty office space, our team wove a new type of workplace built around the very qualities that attracted the client’s workforce to New York itself: spontaneous human connection, endless variation, a density of imagination and innovation, and moments of occasional respite. Having delivered pre-pandemic workplaces around the country, our challenge at Hudson Yards was twofold: first, to translate the company ethos of the classic Silicon Valley tech campus – informal, functional, and democratic – to a building that was formal, geometric and precise; and second, to codify our collective progress towards a more adaptive and supportive model of working.
The project is characterized by the placement of targeted interventions that enhance employee and visitor wellness, break up the regularity of the rectilinear tower, and elevate the optionality of space within the building, in the form of perforated floorplates that create visual and physical connections, built-in seating that acts like park benches, collaborative work surfaces, and myriad green spaces throughout. The scope of kdA’s work at Hudson Yards started with the planning and programming of the vertical campus and is broken down into 3 primary spaces; Arrival spaces (public-facing and company entry points including a sky lobby) Amenity Commons (3 floors of extensive food service, BOH kitchen, servery and dining spaces including an outdoor terrace) and Workplace. The workspace areas include a diverse series of elements, including large event spaces, open office workspace and a series of bespoke libraries.
